Into the Mist: Alexa Daley is Back! 9.18.07

Alexa Daley is back!At least, sort of. She, Yipes, and Roland Warvold have been sailing the Warwick Beacon across the Lonely Sea since the adventures of The Tenth City — toward a destination as yet unknown to either Alexa or the diminutive Yipes. But as they begin to near their new adventure, Roland shares with them an important tale to prepare them for what is to come. That tale comprises the bulk of Into the Mist, with Alexa and Yipes serving as little more than the audience this time around. The real story here is that of Thomas and Roland Warvold, when they were both children in the Land of Elyon. Orphaned, they find themselves given over to a Copperfield existence picking through trash heaps with other children under the watchful eye of the shrewish Madame Vickers and her equally abusive son Finch. When the two of them discover an old piece of paper mentioning the Wakefield House and adorned with symbols familiar to them, the boys make their plans to run away from the Vickers’ home, promising the other children that they will someday return for them. The odd symbols have long been familiar to the Warvold brothers — they’re tattooed on their knees and have been all their lives. They don’t know what the symbols mean, but that doesn’t stop them from letting the old message be the catalyst for launching them into grand adventures. Along the way, they encounter the same symbol a number of times, as they journey to the mysterious Wakefield House — a towering structure that touches the sky, the top of which no adventurer has ever been able to reach (although many have become lost in the attempt!)Author Patrick Carman takes the reader into the distant past of some of the familiar places of Elyon, to a time before Thomas Warvold’s walls, back when the evil Grinvall was a growing threat and Abaddon was imprisoned in his underground “Lake of Fire.” We’ll make some new friends, and meet some old ones in their younger days as well, as Carman sets an exciting stage for the next great and dangerous quest for Alexa Daley.
